Boxing or MMA?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

598197_karateChoosing between boxing and MMA seems like it would be easy, but it’s really not. Both of them have a lot to offer, and there are advantages and disadvantages to both of the sports.

With MMA, Richmond is a good place to train because it’s a popular sport there.  Boxing is also enjoyable to a lot of people there, however, so which one you choose will generally be based on your specific preferences for competition and on your abilities, training goals, and fitness level.

It’s no secret, though, that MMA is becoming bigger than boxing in a lot of ways. Websites that promote the sport receive millions of visitors, and these sites are much larger than similar sites that promote boxing. That doesn’t mean that boxing is dead, but only that MMA is growing faster and more people are tuning in.

When top-name boxers have a much-anticipated bout there are spikes in boxing Websites and TV viewership, but at all other times MMA is attracting more visitors hands down, and it looks like it’s going to be staying that way for a very long time to come.

Competition Boxing for MMA

boxingWhen it comes to MMA, Richmond is a hot spot. A lot of people think it’s just like boxing, but this is far from the truth. There is some boxing and kick boxing in there, but there is also wrestling and wide variety of martial arts of different disciplines.

Everyone who competes in the MMA has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to their style and what they’re best at. It’s also important to remember that the boxing that takes place in the MMA is not the same as what is seen in a more traditional boxing match. One large difference is the weight of the gloves. This correlates to how hard of a punch a person can generally take, especially to the head.

While you want to avoid getting hit as much as possible, it’s not at all realistic to assume that you can always avoid it, so knowing how to absorb punches to the head by covering up and also how to duck under punches can help you out during a fight. Accurate striking is vital, too, because you won’t have much chance of winning against your opponent if you don’t land any punches.
